Image Compressor & Resizer
Drop a picture, or fifty, and each comes back smaller, with what it weighed, what it weighs now and how much was saved. Nothing is uploaded, which is why there is no queue, no daily limit and no limit on how many; and when a form insists on a photo under 200 KB, name the limit and the quality goes only as low as it must.
What it does
- JPG and WebP at the quality you choose; PNG cut to the 256 colours that suit the picture, or kept lossless.
- Converts between JPG, PNG and WebP, and opens AVIF, GIF, BMP and SVG to save as one of the three.
- Resizes to fit a box, by a percentage, or to an exact size with the edges cropped, never enlarging unless asked.
- Large reductions made in steps, so fine detail does not turn to shimmer.
- A size target: the quality is found by bisection, and the picture shrunk only if quality alone cannot get there.
- The original and the result side by side, as a whole or pixel for pixel, before you save.
- Files up to 50 MB each, any number of them, downloaded one by one or as a zip.
- Location data and camera details left out; a file that would only grow is handed back as it was.
How to use it
- Drop the pictures, or paste one.
- Set the format, the quality, a size, or a limit in KB.
- Compare before and after.
- Download one, or all of them as a zip.
What it does not do
- HEIC, the iPhone’s default: decoding it needs WebAssembly, which this site does not load. Set the phone to Most Compatible and it saves JPEG.
- AVIF output: browsers read AVIF, but none will write it from a canvas.
- Free cropping and rotation: that is an editor’s job, and Blur & Mark Up crops.
- Keeping EXIF: the canvas drops it, and a GPS position left out is one that cannot leak.
- MozJPEG and other WebAssembly encoders: this site loads no WebAssembly, so the browser’s own encoders do the work.
Questions
Why is my PNG still large?
A PNG of a photo is large by nature, and lossless cannot help it. Switch on the 256-colour palette, or save it as JPEG or WebP.
Does it enlarge small pictures?
Not unless you ask. A picture smaller than the box stays as it is.
How much quality is lost?
At a JPEG quality of 80 to 85 most photos are hard to tell from the original at a fraction of the size, and you can compare them side by side before you download. Under a size limit, the quality goes only as low as the limit needs.
How long does a big photo take?
A 2.7 MB photo brought under 150 KB takes under a second; a 12-megapixel palette PNG takes about three.
Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
For one job
- PNG to JPG: PNG pictures saved as JPG, see-through areas filled with a colour you pick.
- JPG to WebP: Pictures saved as WebP, each new size shown beside the old one.
- WebP to JPG: WebP pictures saved as JPG for places that will not take WebP.
More in Image Tools
- Social Media Image Sizes: One picture cut to every size the networks ask for: the Instagram square and story, the X header, the YouTube thumbnail and the rest, in one zip.
- Blur & Mark Up a Screenshot: Cover, blur or pixelate what should not be seen in a screenshot, then mark up the rest with arrows, boxes, numbered steps and labels.
- Remove Metadata & EXIF: See what a photo gives away (where it was taken, the camera and its serial number, data hidden after the image) and remove what you choose, pixels untouched.
