About

JPG to WebP

Drop JPG or PNG pictures and each is saved as WebP at quality 80 unless you set another, with its new size beside the old one before you download anything. WebP keeps the transparency a PNG has and is often smaller, but not always: the sizes in the list are the way to know for your pictures.

What it does

  • A screenshot saved as a 473 KB PNG came out at 35 KB as WebP and 70 KB as JPG, both at quality 80.
  • A 7.4 MB camera photo came out at 4.5 MB as WebP and 3.7 MB as JPG at quality 80: the two scales differ.
  • Transparent areas of a PNG stay transparent in the WebP, with nothing filled in behind them.
  • Each file keeps its name with .webp at the end, and a second one of the same name gets -2.
  • Press Compare on a row to look at the WebP and its original side by side, down to single pixels.
  • If the browser cannot write WebP, the row says so, rather than handing back a PNG under a .webp name.

How to use it

  1. Drop the JPG or PNG files on the window.
  2. Set the quality, or a size limit in KB.
  3. Read the size on each row, and compare any that matter.
  4. Download the WebP files, or a zip of them all.

What it does not do

  • A promise that WebP is smaller: for photos it often is not at the same quality number, which is why each size is shown.
  • AVIF, often smaller still: browsers open it but cannot save it from a canvas, so WebP is the newest format offered.

Questions

Is WebP smaller than JPG?

For screenshots, graphics and anything with transparency, usually by half or more. For photos it depends on the quality you pick, since the same number does not mean the same quality in both. Convert a few and read the sizes, or set a size limit and let the quality follow.

Will every browser and app show WebP?

Every current browser shows it. Some older editors, upload forms and email programs still refuse it, and for those a JPG is the safer file to send.

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. The see-through areas stay see-through, which JPG cannot do, so a logo or an icon can go to WebP and stay small without a background colour.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.

  • Blur & Mark Up a Screenshot: Cover, blur or pixelate what should not be seen in a screenshot, then mark up the rest with arrows, boxes, numbered steps and labels.
