About

Word Counter

Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs counted as you type, words the way Microsoft Word counts them, so a limit checked here holds there too. Set a goal and a bar shows how close you are; select part of the text to count just that part.

What it does

  • Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and unique words.
  • Characters as a reader sees them: an emoji or a flag counts as one.
  • Reading time at 238 words a minute and speaking time at 150; pages at single and double spacing.
  • Goals that match real limits (a 60-character title, a 160-character meta description, 280 characters, essay lengths) or a number of your own.
  • Keyword density: the words and the two- and three-word phrases used most, with or without the, of and and.
  • A Flesch reading-ease score and a grade level for English text.
  • Chinese and Japanese counted a character at a time, Thai by its words.
  • Text files dropped in: txt, md, csv, html, srt and the like.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the text, or drop a text file on the window.
  2. Read the counts as you go; select a passage to count only that.
  3. Set a goal for the limit you are writing to.
  4. Open the details for keyword density and readability.

What it does not do

  • Grammar and spell checking, or a thesaurus: each needs a dictionary the page would have to load, and each is a product of its own.
  • Saving the text: what you type is never stored, on purpose.
  • Word and PDF files: copy their text out first, since counting inside .docx and PDF is a job of its own.

Questions

Why does my count differ from another site’s?

The rules differ: hyphenated words, numbers, punctuation standing alone. This tool follows Word’s, so “well-known” is one word, “3.5” is one, and a dash on its own is none.

Does a space count as a character?

Yes, in the character count; the count without spaces leaves them out. X and most limits count with spaces.

How is reading time worked out?

At 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading silently found by a 2019 review of 190 studies; speaking time at 150.

What does the readability score mean?

Flesch reading ease runs from 0 to 100, and higher is easier; 60 to 70 is plain English. The grade level is the US school grade. English only, from 30 words.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.

Often used with

  • Case Converter: the same text in Title Case or sentence case
  • Text Compare: what changed between two drafts
  • DOCX Viewer: a Word document read on its pages, its words counted as Word counts them
