About

DOCX Viewer

Open a Word document in your browser and read it on its pages, laid out by Word’s own rules: line and page breaks, tables, lists, columns, headers, footers and footnotes. Tracked changes and comments show as Word shows them, and Save as PDF writes the pages as you see them, in the same fonts. Nothing is uploaded.

What it does

  • Pages measured against Word’s own PDFs: the same line breaks wherever the document’s fonts, or open fonts with their widths, are at hand.
  • Equations set as Word sets them, fractions, roots, sums and brackets that grow, in STIX Two Math where Cambria Math is not at hand.
  • All markup, No markup or Original, every comment lit on its words; Review lists each change and comment with its author and page.
  • Reading sets the text in one column at the size you choose, and is what a phone opens first.
  • Find, with Match case and Whole words, lights every match on its page.
  • Save as PDF in the fonts the screen used, each comment a PDF note; or print, or save the text or the pictures.
  • Opens a document locked with a password, checked in your browser; the password goes nowhere.
  • File shows what the document holds: author and dates, hidden text, macros, links and embedded files, none of them opened or run.

How to use it

  1. Drop a .docx, .doc, .odt or .rtf on the window, choose one, or try the sample contract.
  2. Read it on its pages, or switch to Reading for one column.
  3. Open Review for the tracked changes and comments, and choose the markup to show.
  4. Press Save as PDF or Print; More saves the text or the pictures.

What it does not do

  • Editing: a viewer that never writes the file cannot change it, so the file you send on is the one you received.
  • Charts and SmartArt: each is a drawing program of its own, so it keeps its room on the page in a box that names it.

Questions

Is the document uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read, laid out and drawn by this page, in your browser. The page fetches only the open fonts the document needs, from this site, and a password is used here to unlock the file and kept nowhere.

Why do some lines break where Word’s do not?

Word sets each line with its font’s widths. Where the document’s font, or an open font with the same widths, is at hand, lines break as in Word; a stand-in of the same kind, marked in amber under Fonts, can move a word. In Chrome or Edge, Use the fonts on this computer lets it use yours.

Does the PDF look like the screen?

Yes. It is written from the same pages with the same font files, each character where the screen put it, and only the glyphs the document uses go into it. It carries the markup you chose, and hidden text only if you show it.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
