About

Open DOCX Without Word

Someone sent a .docx and there is no Word here: choose it and read it in your browser. It opens in Reading, the text in one column fitted to the screen, on a phone as on a desktop; Pages shows it laid out as Word lays it out. No account, no app, and the file stays with you.

What it does

  • Reading fits the text to the window, with headings, lists, tables and pictures in order and the footnotes at the end.
  • On a desktop, A− and A+ step the text from 14 to 24 pixels.
  • The outline, Contents on a phone, lists the headings; choose one to go to it.
  • Review names who made each tracked change and comment, and the page it is on.
  • Opens .doc, .odt and .rtf as well, and a .docx locked with a password once you type it.
  • File says what else the document carries, macros and links among them, without opening any of it.

How to use it

  1. Choose the .docx, or drop it on the window.
  2. Read it in one column, or switch to Pages to see it as it prints.
  3. Use Find for a word; the matches light up as you type.
  4. Save it as a PDF to keep a copy that opens anywhere.

What it does not do

  • Changing the document: nothing is written back, so a reply with edits needs a word processor such as LibreOffice, which is free.
  • A document stored online, behind a OneDrive or Google Drive link: download the file first, then choose it here.

Questions

How do I open a .docx on a phone without Word?

Open this page on the phone and choose the file from Files or Downloads; it opens in Reading, sized to the screen. Switch to Pages to see how it prints.

Will it look as it does in Word?

On Pages, yes: the layout follows Word’s rules and was measured against Word’s own PDFs, line for line where its fonts are at hand. Reading changes the look on purpose, so that the text is easy to read.

Is it safe to open a document from someone I do not know?

Macros are named and never run, links and embedded files are listed but never followed or opened, and a picture linked from the web is not fetched. The document is read by this page and goes nowhere.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
