Notepad
Write notes that stay in your browser and nowhere else: no account, no server, nothing uploaded. Markdown is drawn as you type, task boxes tick in the preview, and an optional password lock encrypts the notes on your device, so someone else at this computer sees only that they are locked.
What it does
- Several notes, saved as you type, named by their first line or by you, and searched ignoring case and accents.
- Markdown with a live preview, under the text or beside it: headings, lists, tables, code, links and strikethrough.
- Task boxes that tick in the preview, and lists that carry on when you press Enter.
- A formatting toolbar with Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I, showing what the text at the cursor has.
- A password lock: AES-256 with the key made on your device, locking again when the window closes or after a time you choose.
- A deleted note leaves storage at once, with ten seconds to take it back.
- Each note downloads as .md, as a web page or as plain text, prints, or copies with its formatting.
- A backup of every note in one zip, restored without replacing a newer version of a note.
How to use it
- Start typing: the first note is ready, and it saves itself.
- Use # for a heading, - for a list and - [ ] for a task, or the toolbar.
- Read it in the preview under the text, or side by side.
- Lock the notes with a password if others use this computer.
- Download a note, or a backup of all of them.
What it does not do
- Sync between devices: it needs a server holding your notes, which this notepad is built not to have.
- A forgotten password brought back: the key is made from it on your device and kept nowhere, so nobody can open locked notes without it.
- Pictures from other sites in the preview: the page loads nothing from elsewhere, which also keeps a tracking pixel in a pasted note silent.
- Maths, diagrams and footnotes: they are developer-editor extensions, beyond the Markdown GitHub and most note apps read.
Questions
Where are my notes kept?
In this browser’s own storage (IndexedDB), on this device. Clearing the site’s data deletes them, and Safari deletes a site’s data after seven days of use without a visit, so download a backup of what matters.
Can someone else at this computer read them?
Without the lock, yes: anyone using this browser can open the Notepad. With it, they see only that there are locked notes. The notes lock again when the window closes, when the page reloads and after the time you chose.
Is a deleted note really gone?
It leaves storage the moment you delete it; the ten seconds to take it back are held in the page’s memory. The browser may keep the old bytes in its files until it tidies them, out of reach of any page, and with the lock on they are encrypted.
Does anything I type leave my device?
Not from the page: it makes no request as you type. A browser setting can: Chrome’s Enhanced spell check and Edge’s Microsoft Editor send the text of the fields they check to Google or Microsoft.
Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
