About

PDF Page Numbers

Drop a PDF and its page numbers are drawn on a preview as you set them: where on the page, on which pages, starting at what. The text around the number is yours, so Page 3 of 12, iii and a Bates number such as ABC000123 are all the same tool. Every copy is read again by a second PDF reader, which must find each number where it was put.

What it does

  • Top or bottom; left, centre, right, or a book’s outer or inner corners; at the distance from the edge you set.
  • Any text around the number: Page {n} of {p}, the file’s name, a case number.
  • Numbers as 1, 2, 3, Roman numerals or letters, from any first number, with zeros in front for a Bates number.
  • Only the pages you name: 2- leaves a cover out, and the count starts after it.
  • Several files at once, each on its own or in one count that runs through them, saved as a zip.
  • Measures from the page as it is shown, so turned, cropped and mixed-size pages get the number in the same corner.
  • Sans, serif or mono type in any size and colour, with Turkish, Greek and Cyrillic letters.
  • Checks every copy in pdf.js, Firefox’s reader, and says where a number sits on text the page already had.

How to use it

  1. Drop one or more PDFs on the window.
  2. Type the text or take a ready-made one, and set the first number.
  3. Set the corner, the distance from the edge and the type; the preview follows, with the number close up beside the page.
  4. Look closer to read the page at full size before anything is written.
  5. Download the PDF, or a zip of them all.

What it does not do

  • Removing numbers a file already has: they are part of each page’s drawing, and nothing in the file marks them as numbers.
  • A locked file: writing on it would hand back a copy without its lock, so its row sends it to Unlock & Protect PDF first.
  • Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese and Korean: the fonts hold Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, and the window names a character it cannot draw.

Questions

How do I start numbering after the cover page?

Type 2- in Pages. The cover gets nothing and the page after it is numbered 1. If the cover should still count as page 1, set the first number to 2.

Can it do Bates numbering?

Yes. Type a prefix before {n}, set the digits to 6 or 8, and turn on carrying the count on from each file to the next. The arrows on each row set the order.

Why do page numbers land in the wrong place in other tools?

A PDF page can be stored turned or cropped, or with its coordinates left scaled by its own drawing, as scans often are. This tool measures from the page as shown, undoes what the page left open, and reads the copy back to see each number where it was put.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened, numbered and checked in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
