About

Blur & Mark Up a Screenshot

Drop a screenshot, or paste one straight from the clipboard, and take out what should not be in it: cover it, blur it, or break it into squares. What you hide is gone from the picture you save, not laid over it, so nobody gets it back by dragging a layer aside. Then mark up the rest with arrows, boxes, numbered steps and labels.

What it does

  • Cover in a solid colour, blur or pixelate; the pixels are replaced in the saved file.
  • A blur that cannot be sharpened back, since each square is averaged before it is smoothed.
  • A warning when a blur or the squares are too light for the height of the text.
  • Arrows (Shift for an even angle), boxes, circles, lines, freehand, a highlighter, labels on a plate and self-numbering badges.
  • Any mark picked up again: moved, resized by its handles, nudged with the arrow keys, its colour, thickness or size changed.
  • Crop, with the marks moving with it; fifty steps of undo.
  • Save as PNG, JPEG or WebP, or copy to the clipboard; a photo turned by its EXIF opens and saves upright.
  • The picture is drawn fresh, so no camera, place or program tag rides along.

How to use it

  1. Drop the screenshot, or copy one and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) in the window.
  2. Hide what must go with Cover, Blur or Pixelate.
  3. Add arrows, boxes, steps and labels; click any mark to change it.
  4. Crop if you want, then save or copy.

What it does not do

  • Finding faces or text automatically: that needs OCR or a model, both WebAssembly, which this site does not load.
  • Emoji stamps: they are stickers, not privacy.
  • Batches: the marks would have to be drawn on each picture anyway.

Questions

Is a blurred number safe?

Not always. Blurred and pixelated text has been read back before (Depix in 2020, Unredacter in 2022). This blur averages before it smooths, which defeats those attacks, and warns when it is too light; but something short and guessable, like a PIN, can be tried against any blur. A solid cover is the only certain one.

Can someone remove the blur from the saved file?

No. The file is drawn from the hidden pixels, and there is no layer under them.

Does the saved picture carry the original’s metadata?

No. It is drawn fresh, so the camera, place and program tags are not in it.

PNG or JPEG?

PNG for a screenshot: sharp text and exact colours. JPEG when size matters more than sharpness, and WebP for both where the other side takes it.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
