About

DOCX to PDF

Choose a .docx and save it as a PDF of the pages you see: the same line and page breaks, headers, footers, tables, footnotes and pictures, set by Word’s rules. The fonts go into the file, so it looks the same on any screen and prints as shown, and nothing leaves your browser.

What it does

  • Every character is real text in the PDF, equations included, so it can be searched, selected and copied.
  • The fonts are embedded as subsets: the document’s own when it carries them, your computer’s if you allow it, otherwise open fonts.
  • Web links stay clickable, and the PDF takes the document’s title, or its file name when it has none.
  • With All markup chosen, tracked changes show as Word marks them and each comment becomes a note by its words.
  • With No markup, the PDF holds the text as it reads once every change is accepted.
  • Landscape pages stay landscape, and each page keeps the size its section gives it.
  • The file is named after the document: contract.docx becomes contract.pdf.

How to use it

  1. Drop the .docx on the window or choose it; once it opens, Save as PDF is the button in focus.
  2. If it has tracked changes or comments, choose All markup, No markup or Original under Review.
  3. Press Save as PDF. On a phone the save sheet opens by itself and names the file first.
  4. The line under the pages then says how many pages and fonts went into the file.

What it does not do

  • Links to places inside the document: they work on the screen, and the PDF keeps the ones to web addresses.
  • A tagged PDF for screen readers, or PDF/A for archives: the file is a plain PDF of the pages.
  • Charts and SmartArt: the PDF shows the box that stands in for each, as the screen does.

Questions

Is the PDF the same as Word’s Save as PDF?

The pages break where Word breaks them. Where a font is missing, an open one with the same letter widths stands in if one exists, so the lines still break in the same places; the Fonts button under the pages names each stand-in.

Does the document leave my computer?

No. The PDF is written by this page in your browser and downloaded from it; the only files fetched are the open fonts it needs, from this site.

Can it convert a document locked with a password?

Yes: a .docx locked in Office opens once you type its password here, and the PDF is written without one. To lock the PDF itself, give it a password of its own afterwards.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
