About

PNG to JPG

Drop one PNG or many, and each is saved as a JPG at quality 80 unless you set another. JPG has no transparency, so whatever was see-through in the PNG is filled with white, or with the colour you pick under Behind a JPG. The pictures are converted in your browser and never uploaded.

What it does

  • A logo’s soft edges and shadows are blended onto that colour, so pick the colour of the page the JPG will sit on.
  • Photos and screenshots with gradients shrink most: a 35.5 MB PNG photo came out at 3.7 MB.
  • Each row shows the size before and after, with a + when the JPG came out larger than its PNG.
  • Each keeps its name with the new ending: logo.png becomes logo.jpg, and a second logo.png in the batch logo-2.jpg.
  • Under a size limit in KB the quality drops no lower than 40; past that, the picture is made smaller until it fits.
  • Notes kept in the PNG’s text chunks, such as an image generator’s prompt, are not carried into the JPG.
  • WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and SVG pictures dropped with them are saved as JPG too.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PNG files on the window, paste one, or choose them.
  2. Check the colour under Behind a JPG: white unless you change it.
  3. Set the quality, or a size limit in KB, and press Compare on a row to see it beside its PNG.
  4. Download the JPG, or all of them as a zip.

What it does not do

  • Transparency kept: JPG cannot store it, so a logo that must stay see-through stays PNG, or goes to WebP, which keeps it.
  • A lossless JPG: even at quality 100 a JPG is compressed with some loss, so keep the PNG if you will edit it again.

Questions

Why did my JPG come out bigger than the PNG?

Because the picture is mostly flat colour, such as a chart, a diagram or a simple icon, which PNG stores compactly and JPG does not: a test chart grew by a fifth. Photos shrink as JPG; flat pictures are often better left as PNG.

Why do some converters give a black background?

A transparent pixel still stores a colour underneath, often black, and a converter that simply drops the transparency shows it. Here each PNG is drawn over the colour under Behind a JPG first, so the see-through parts take that colour.

Can I turn the JPG back into a PNG?

Yes, pick PNG under Save as, but neither the detail JPG compression removed nor the transparency comes back: the filled background stays. Keep the original PNG if you may need it again.

How many PNGs can I convert at once?

As many as you drop. They are converted one after another, each up to 50 MB, and several download together as a zip.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
