vCard QR Code
Fill in a name and whatever else belongs on the card, and a QR code is drawn that a phone camera reads as a contact and offers to save. Phone, email, website, company, job title, address and a note go into a vCard 3.0, the format both iPhone and Android read, and nothing is stored on a server.
What it does
- A comma or a semicolon in a name or a company is escaped as the format requires, so Acme, Inc. stays one company.
- A phone number keeps its leading + and loses its spaces and brackets: +90 (532) 123-45-67 becomes +905321234567.
- A website without https:// gets it, so the phone opens it as a link.
- A note can run to several lines, and each stays a line of its own on the card.
- A card with every field filled came to 61 modules a side, and the advice line gives the smallest width to print it at.
How to use it
- Type the first and last name, or the company alone.
- Add the phone, email, website and address you want on the card.
- Scan the code with your own phone to see the card before printing.
- Download the SVG for the business card’s design, or the PNG.
What it does not do
- A photo on the card: a picture would make the code too dense to print small, so the card holds text alone.
- Changing a card already printed: the details are in the code itself, so a new address means a new code.
Questions
What happens when someone scans it?
The camera shows the contact and offers to add it, with the fields filled in as you typed them. Nothing is sent anywhere first: the whole card is inside the code.
How small can it be printed on a business card?
That depends on how much it holds. The advice line gives the smallest width for the code you made; leaving out the note and the address makes the code coarser, so it can go smaller.
Which details should go on it?
The ones someone needs to reach you: a name, one phone number and an email cover most cards. Every extra field adds modules, and a code printed small scans better with less in it.
