About

Title Case Converter

Paste a headline, or a list of titles one a line, and each comes back in title case by the style guide you pick: Chicago, AP, APA or MLA. The four agree on most words and part on a few, such as with, through and if, and a headline typed all in capitals is brought down to lower case before the rules apply.

What it does

  • Chicago and MLA keep every preposition lower case, however long: A Walk through the Woods.
  • AP and APA capitalise any word of four letters or more, so the same title is A Walk Through the Woods.
  • If stays lower case in AP and APA and takes a capital in Chicago and MLA: What to Do If You Get Lost.
  • The first word, the last word and the first word after a colon always take a capital, whatever they are.
  • Each part of a hyphenated word is judged on its own: State-of-the-Art Design.
  • A title in capitals, such as THE GREAT GATSBY, is lowered first and comes out The Great Gatsby.

How to use it

  1. Paste the headline, or one title a line.
  2. Pick Title Case, then the style guide you write for.
  3. Copy the result.

What it does not do

  • Telling a preposition from part of a verb: up is kept lower case in Give up on Your Dreams, where the guides capitalise it, since a word list cannot read the sentence.
  • Headlines in sentence style, as many news sites write them: that is Sentence case, in the same list.

Questions

Which style guide should I use?

The one your publication follows: AP for news and most American blogs, Chicago for books, APA and MLA for papers in psychology and the humanities. Where none is set, pick one and use it for every title.

Is with capitalised in a title?

In AP and APA, yes, since it has four letters. In Chicago and MLA, no, since they keep every preposition lower case whatever its length. From, into and over split the guides the same way.

Why is a short word like Is capitalised?

Because it is a verb, and every guide capitalises verbs however short: It Is What It Is. Only articles, conjunctions and prepositions are kept lower case.
