Split PDF
Drop a PDF and its pages appear as numbered thumbnails. Type the ranges you want, such as 1-3, 4-10, 12-, and each range becomes a file of its own; or cut the document every so many pages, or into one file per page. The pages are copied as they are, never drawn again, and nothing leaves your browser.
What it does
- A range is one page (5), a run (3-7), an open end (12- runs to the last page) or a run backwards (9-6).
- Ranges may overlap, and a range written twice gives two files, so one page can go into several parts.
- Every N pages cuts the document into parts of that many pages, the last holding whatever is left.
- The numbers are the ones on the thumbnails, so pages moved, turned or removed first are split as they now stand.
- Drop several PDFs and the ranges run across all their pages, to join files and cut them up again in one go.
- Files are named after the original and their pages, padded so they sort: report-02 before report-10.
- One part downloads as a PDF; several come together in a zip.
How to use it
- Drop the PDF on the window, or choose it.
- Under Save as, pick Ranges, Every N pages or a PDF per page.
- Type the ranges, or how many pages each part should hold.
- Check how many files it will make, then download.
What it does not do
- Splitting at the bookmarks: the tool reads a document’s pages, not its outline, so the parts carry no bookmarks either.
- Making the parts smaller: each keeps its pages exactly as they were, and shrinking a PDF takes Ghostscript, which cannot run in a browser.
- The original’s title and author: each part is a new document, and those fields start empty.
Questions
How do I take out just a few pages?
Write them as one range, 3-7 say, and the download is a single PDF of those pages. For pages that are not next to each other, remove the rest and save as One PDF instead.
Why do the parts add up to more than the original?
Each part is a whole PDF with its own copy of the fonts and images its pages use, where the original stored them once for every page.
Can I split a PDF that has a password?
Yes, if you know the password. The tool asks for it, and the parts are saved without one. A file that only forbids printing or copying opens without asking.
How large a file can it split?
Up to 150 MB per PDF. The whole file is held in your browser’s memory while you work, and once more while the parts are written, which is what sets the limit.
Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
More in PDF Tools
- JPG to PDF & PDF to JPG: Turn JPG, PNG and other pictures into a PDF, or the pages of a PDF into JPG or PNG pictures, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
- Compare PDF: Compare two PDFs and see every change marked on the pages, word by word, or the pages compared as pictures; download a report to send on.
- Watermark PDF: Put a text or a logo across the pages of a PDF: centred, at an edge or repeated, at any angle and opacity, each copy read back by a second reader.
