About

PDF to PNG

Drop a PDF and its pages appear as thumbnails, ready to save as PNG pictures, lossless, so the edges of letters, lines and charts stay as crisp as the page draws them. Pick 72, 150, 300 or 600 dpi, list the pages you want or take them all, and they are drawn in your browser with nothing uploaded.

What it does

  • A typed contract came out smaller as PNG than as JPG in Chrome at 150 dpi: 555 KB against 606 KB.
  • A scanned document went the other way, 21 MB as PNG and 4.4 MB as JPG, since a scan is a photograph of paper.
  • Diagrams and slides with thin lines are where PNG earns its place: JPG smears a fine line into its background.
  • Pages arrive as report-01.png, report-02.png and so on, in one zip when there are several.
  • A single page downloads from its own thumbnail, without the rest.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PDF on the window.
  2. Keep PNG, and pick the resolution.
  3. List the pages you want, or leave Pages empty for all of them.
  4. Download one page from its thumbnail, or all of them.

What it does not do

  • A transparent background: a PDF page is paper-white wherever nothing is printed, so each picture is drawn on white.
  • The logos and figures pulled out as separate files: what you get is each page drawn whole.

Questions

Why is a PNG of my scan so large?

A scan is a photograph of paper, full of grain that a lossless format must keep exactly. A scanned test document came out five times larger as PNG than as JPG; for scans and photos, JPG is the better choice.

Which resolution should I pick?

150 dpi to read on a screen or paste into slides, 300 dpi to print, 600 dpi for small type or a diagram that will be enlarged. Each step up doubles the width and the height, so the files grow about four times.

Can I convert just one page?

Yes: type its number in Pages, or press Save on its thumbnail. Ranges such as 2-4, 9 work too.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
