PDF to JPG

Drop a PDF and every page appears as a thumbnail. Pick JPG or PNG, 72, 150, 300 or 600 dpi, and colour or grey, then save all the pages, the ones you list, or a single page. Each page is drawn on white at the size the PDF gives it, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

What it does

  • At 300 dpi an A4 page comes out 2480 × 3508 pixels, and the size of page 1 is shown before you save.
  • JPG quality from 1 to 100, 90 to begin with; PNG is lossless, for text and lines that must stay sharp.
  • Grey mixes the channels as CSS’s grayscale() does, so a colour page comes out as a black-and-white copy would.
  • The Pages box takes ranges like 1-3, 5, 8- in any order, even backwards.
  • Each picture is named after its PDF and page number, padded so the files sort: report-07.jpg.
  • Several PDFs can go in at once; one picture downloads as it is, and several come in one zip.
  • Scanned pages are drawn too, including the JBIG2 and CCITT images many scanners write for black and white.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PDF here, or choose it from your files.
  2. Pick JPG or PNG, the resolution, and colour or grey.
  3. Leave Pages empty for every page, or list the ones you want.
  4. Download the picture, or the zip of them all.

What it does not do

  • A transparent background: each page is drawn on white, as it would be printed.
  • Pictures over 16,384 pixels on a side: some browsers refuse a canvas that large, so a big poster at 600 dpi comes out smaller.
  • The photos inside a PDF at their own size: each page is drawn whole, text and all, at the resolution you pick.

Questions

How big will the pictures be?

The page’s size in inches times the dpi: a US Letter page at 150 dpi is 1275 × 1650 pixels. The tool gives the size of page 1 before you save.

JPG or PNG?

JPG for scans and photos, where its smaller files lose nothing you would notice at the default quality. PNG for pages of text, lines and charts, which JPG softens slightly at the edges; the files are larger.

Will the text still be selectable?

No. A picture is pixels: its text can no longer be selected, searched or read aloud, and links stop working. Keep the PDF for that, and send the pictures where only a picture will do.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
