About

Nano ID Generator

A Nano ID is ready as the window opens: 21 characters from A–Z, a–z, 0–9, _ and -, safe in a URL, with 126 random bits. Change the length or the characters, make up to a thousand, and the line under them says how long you could keep making IDs at your rate before a repeat became a 1% chance.

What it does

  • At 1,000 IDs an hour, the default 21 characters give a 1% chance of a repeat after about 149 billion years.
  • Ten letters and digits last about 14 years at that rate, and eight lower-case characters about 9 days.
  • Alphabets: Nano ID’s own 64, letters and digits, lower case and digits, hex, digits alone, or characters you type.
  • Each character of a typed alphabet counts once, however often it is typed, and an emoji counts as one.
  • No character is likelier than another, even with an alphabet of 36 that does not divide a byte evenly.

How to use it

  1. Set the length, from 2 to 64.
  2. Pick the characters, or type your own.
  3. Choose how fast you will make them, and read how long until a repeat is likely.
  4. Copy the IDs, or download the list.

What it does not do

  • Order by time: a Nano ID is random throughout, so for IDs that sort by when they were made, the ULID tab is beside it.
  • A check for repeats: none is kept, since every ID made would have to be stored somewhere; the odds line is the answer.

Questions

How long should a Nano ID be?

Long enough that a repeat stays unlikely for as many as you will make. Set the rate you expect and shorten the ID until the time shown is longer than the system will live; 21 characters is far more than most need.

Nano ID or UUID?

A UUID v4 has 122 random bits in 36 characters; the default Nano ID has 126 in 21, so it is shorter in a URL. A UUID fits a uuid column and the libraries that expect one.

Is the default alphabet safe in URLs and file names?

In a URL, yes: none of its characters needs escaping. In file names on a disk that ignores case, as most Windows and Mac drives do, two IDs that differ only in case would clash, so pick lower case and digits there.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
