About

Instagram Story Size

An Instagram Story or Reel is 1080 by 1920 pixels, a 9:16 frame, and Meta asks for the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% of each side to be kept clear of the name, the buttons and the caption. Drop a picture and it is cut to that size with those edges dimmed; drag it until faces and words sit in the middle 950 × 979.

What it does

  • The covered edges come from Meta’s guide for Stories and Reels: 269 pixels at the top, 672 at the bottom, 65 at each side.
  • Fill crops the picture to 9:16, and dragging it chooses what stays.
  • Fit keeps the whole picture on a colour; Blur behind sets it over a blurred copy of itself.
  • A picture smaller than 1080 by 1920 is flagged with how many times it would be blown up.
  • The file is named after the picture and the size: photo Instagram Story or Reel 1080x1920.jpg.

How to use it

  1. Drop the photo on the window, or paste it.
  2. Drag it so the faces and any text sit inside the bright middle.
  3. Pick Fill, or Blur behind for a landscape photo.
  4. Download the 1080 × 1920 picture.

What it does not do

  • Video: a Reel’s frame is the same size, but this cuts still pictures only.
  • Stickers, text and music: Instagram adds those itself once the picture is in.

Questions

What size is an Instagram Story?

1080 by 1920 pixels, an aspect ratio of 9:16, and Reels use the same frame. A picture of another shape is cropped or shown with bands, so cutting it to 9:16 first decides what stays.

Where is the safe zone in a Story?

Meta’s guide keeps the top 14% and the bottom 35% clear, with 6% at each side: on 1080 by 1920 that leaves 950 by 979 in the middle. The name sits at the top; a Reel’s caption, sound and buttons take the bottom and the right.

How do I fit a landscape photo into a Story?

Choose Blur behind: the whole photo sits across the middle, and an enlarged, blurred copy of it fills the space above and below.
