About

CSV to Excel

Drop a CSV, or paste the rows, and download it as an .xlsx workbook that opens in Excel with every letter right, whatever the CSV was saved in. Numbers and ISO dates become values Excel can sort and add up, the header row is bold and frozen with filter buttons, and codes such as 007 keep their zeros.

What it does

  • Numbers such as 1234.50 or -3 become numbers, and 2024-05-12 or 2024-05-12 10:30 become dates shown as dates.
  • A number with a leading zero, or more than 15 digits, stays text, so a code or a card number comes through whole.
  • Amounts written 1.234,50 and dates written 12.05.2024 stay text until Tidy numbers… or Tidy dates… rewrites their column.
  • Each column is as wide as its longest cell, up to about 60 characters, so the sheet opens readable.
  • Text such as =1+1 goes in as text, never as a formula Excel would run.
  • The sheet takes the file’s name, cut to Excel’s 31 characters and cleared of the characters it refuses.
  • A cell longer than Excel’s 32,767 characters is cut there, and the message after saving says how many were.
  • Untick Numbers and dates and every cell goes in as text, exactly as the CSV had it.

How to use it

  1. Drop the CSV on the window, or paste its rows into the box.
  2. Check that the letters look right and that First row is the header is ticked.
  3. Tidy any column of amounts or dates written the local way, so they become numbers and dates.
  4. Save as Excel and download the .xlsx.

What it does not do

  • Formulas, charts or formatting beyond the bold header: the workbook holds the data, and Excel adds the rest.
  • Several CSVs as sheets of one workbook: each file becomes a workbook of its own.
  • .xls, the format before 2007: every Excel since then opens .xlsx.

Questions

Why not just open the CSV in Excel?

Excel guesses. It reads a UTF-8 file without a byte order mark in the local code page, so ş turns into ÅŸ, it splits at your region’s separator, and it turns 007 into 7. An .xlsx leaves it nothing to guess.

Will Excel see my dates as dates?

Yes, when they are written 2024-05-12, with or without a time: they go in as Excel date values. Dates written 12.05.2024 or 05/12/2024 are put in that form first with Tidy dates…, where you can say which part comes first if the column does not.

What about dates before 1900?

They stay text. Excel’s calendar starts on 1 January 1900, and it counts a 29 February 1900 that never was, which the workbook allows for in the dates after it.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or open is uploaded, and there is no account and no queue. How that works.
